About Our Project

In November 2024, area voters approved the construction of a new ambulance facility through Measure C-24. The approval rate was the highest of any bond measure on the November ballot — 76.8%. The bond generated $5.6 million in net funding to be used for the following tasks:

Build a replacement facility to last 50+ years and meet the District’s needs including: housing two ambulance crews 24/7, improving the level of 911 ambulance response; housing four ambulances indoors extending their useful lives; providing a secure facility for ambulance crews and all medications including narcotics; providing heated ambulance bays that can double as an evacuation collection point for people with medical and/or mobility issues in the event of disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes or floods; providing whole-facility solar energy with battery and emergency generator back-up.

In February 2025, the District contracted with Kitchell, Inc. for owner advisor services. Last month, the District awarded Edwards Construction of Arroyo Grande the Progressive Design-Build contract, along with initial funding, for the design and pre-construction phases of the project. The facility design is expected to be completed this fall, with Edwards sensitive to the architecture of the area of Cambria where the new facility will be located, and the parking lot of the existing facility. Then, earlier this month, Bowen Engineering of Fresno was awarded a contract to demolish the original ambulance garage and crew quarters, which have not been used since flooding occurred in 2017. This is largely due to the proximity of the building and another small outbuilding to the toe of the slope behind it. Once that building is torn down sometime this summer and the area is restored, it can be used as a parking lot while the remaining construction takes place in 2026. The target completion date for the facility portion of the project is late calendar year 2026.
